The Division of Breast Surgery at Asan Medical Center leads breast cancer care by integrating cutting-edge medical environment, exceptional organizational expertise, and a value-driven approach to patient care.

Hardware: Korea’s Largest Infrastructure and Extensive Clinical Experience

Established in 1989 as Korea’s first private enterprise-led tertiary hospital, Asan Medical Center is the nation’s largest medical institution with approximately 2,400 beds, leading clinical care and research.

Division of Breast Surgery has performed approximately 50,000 breast cancer surgeries, establishing itself as a specialized team with the most surgical experience in Korea and advanced capabilities in complex adjuvant treatments. This clinical experience goes beyond mere numbers, providing a crucial foundation for evidence-based precision care and patient-centered research.

Software: Advanced Precision Multidisciplinary Care System Evolved from Korea’s Most Multidisciplinary Clinics

In 2006, the Division of Breast Surgery became the first in Korea to introduce a multidisciplinary breast cancer clinic, establishing a sophisticated system in which surgery, oncology, radiology, radiation oncology, pathology, plastic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and laboratory medicine collaborate horizontally.

We currently operate four specialized multidisciplinary clinics including Recurrent Breast Cancer Clinic, Hereditary Breast Cancer Clinic, Young-Onset Breast Cancer Clinic, and Preoperative Systemic Therapy Clinic and we are preparing to open a Breast Reconstruction Clinic. This precise system, developed from the largest volume of collaborative cases in Korea, serves as a core capability for managing complex breast cancer treatments and led to the creation of the Asan Clinical Care Standard (ACCS), the unique clinical guidelines of Asan Medical Center, in 2019.

Philosophy: Care That Prioritizes Quality of Life Beyond Survival

The treatment philosophy of the Division of Breast Surgery emphasizes enhancing patients’ quality of life, going beyond mere survival. To help patients maintain self-esteem and return to daily life smoothly after surgery, we perform the highest number of breast reconstruction surgeries in Korea through close collaboration with the Department of Plastic Surgery.

In 2010, we made an innovative effort by developing Korea’s first dedicated application to collect patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) digitally, and since 2014, we have implemented a screening system for all inpatients to assess distress and connect them with psychiatric care when needed. This goes beyond simple cancer treatment and represents a concrete practice of our organizational philosophy, which prioritizes patients’ holistic quality of life.

Additionally, we have recently embraced robotic surgery and digital healthcare technologies, seeking a harmonious integration of cutting-edge technology with patient-centered care.

Mission and Vision

The Division of Breast Surgery at Asan Medical Center will continue to establish new standards for breast cancer treatment in Korea, focusing on the following three core areas.

  • Systematizing clinical outcomes into data-driven research assets
  • Digitizing the multidisciplinary collaboration system
  • Advancing a clinical decision-making framework based on quality of life (QoL)

Through precise surgery that saves lives and support that extends through recovery and daily life, the division promises to be a true partner throughout every step of the patient’s breast cancer journey.
