The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine is committed to ensuring patient safety in the operating room and intensive care unit, and provides care for patients in Pain Clinic.

We control acute pain (postoperative pain) and chronic pain while offering general anesthesia, local anesthesia, sedation, and other anesthesia and sedation necessary for nonsurgical treatment.

Physical pain caused by diseases and injuries has begun with the history of mankind, and humans have made a ceaseless effort to get free from the pain. The Old Testament says that God created Adam, then He put Adam into a deep sleep and removed a rib from Adam’s side to create woman. Putting Adam into a deep sleep is a basic notion of anesthesiology and pain medicine aiming to eliminate pain before a surgical act of rib removal. Queen Victoria had used an anesthetic drug for painless delivery during the birth of Prince Leopold in the 19th century when birth pain was believed as a gift of God, causing a great sensation. Since then, anesthesiology became absolutely needed for surgery in modern medicine, and the remarkable advancement of anesthesiology makes it possible for physicians to perform various high-risk operations. Moreover better understanding of pain and development of diverse methods for pain treatment and regional anesthesia have contributed to liberate humans from pain and improve the quality of life.

With the establishment of AMC in 1989, the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine has been dedicated to helping high-risk patients with various associated diseases undergo a safe operation. We successfully performed anesthesia for heart surgery in 1992 and living related donor partial liver transplantation in 1994 which were both the first in Korea. To join in the global trend, AMC opened the Pain Clinic in 1995 and runs a same-day operation center from 1996. The East Building built in 1994 and the New Building built in 2008 also support the environment and facilities for us to offer best medical care and services.

In 2014 the Pediatric Sedation Clinic was established to provide safe sedation to pediatric patients during outpatient procedures and examination while taking a global lead with best clinical treatment, excellent research programs, and systematic education and training systems. AMC Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine will do its best to ensure patient safety and improve the quality of life.

AMC uses evidence-based practices and offers sports therapy as the first line of treatment in collaboration with the sports health center and the department of rehabilitation medicine. If needed, injection therapy is possible with the department of radiology and the department of anesthesiology and pain medicine.
