Welcome to the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea
The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Asan Medical Center (AMC) is recognized as a leading institution in Asia for the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. Renowned for its high surgical volume, exceptional patient outcomes, and commitment to academic excellence, the division continues to set global standards in the field of gastrointestinal surgery.
Clinical Excellence & High-Volume Expertise
Recognized both nationally and internationally as a high-volume center, the division performs a comprehensive range of procedures including gastrectomies for gastric cancer, advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, metabolic and bariatric interventions, and surgeries for benign conditions such as hernias and reflux disease.
A substantial majority of our surgeries focus on gastric cancer, and most of these are performed using minimally invasive techniques. These approaches, particularly laparoscopic and robotic-assisted gastrectomies, are associated with faster recovery, fewer postoperative complications, and improved quality of life. The division follows standardized clinical pathways and enhanced recovery protocols to ensure continuity of care and optimized outcomes from diagnosis through long-term follow-up.
Multidisciplinary care is central to our clinical model. Regular tumor board discussions bring together specialists in oncology, radiology, pathology, and gastroenterology to develop individualized treatment plans. This collaborative framework ensures that even the most complex cases are approached with clarity, precision, and shared expertise.
Academic Leadership & Innovation
As the core surgical division within the University of Ulsan College of Medicine, our team plays a pivotal academic role in education, research, and international collaboration. We actively contribute to clinical research and multi-institutional studies and are widely published in top-tier surgical and oncology journals.
Our academic calendar features regular multidisciplinary conferences focused on gastrointestinal malignancies. These forums provide a foundation for real-time clinical decision-making and serve as platforms for training residents, fellows, and visiting physicians from around the world.
Innovation is embedded in our surgical practice. The division is at the forefront of applying digital navigation, enhanced visualization, and precision techniques in minimally invasive surgery. These advances improve surgical accuracy, increase resectability in complex cases, and represent the future of oncologic surgery.
International Recognition & Global Reach
The division’s leadership is recognized worldwide. In Newsweek's 2025 ranking of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals, Asan Medical Center ranked 4th globally in gastroenterology and 5th in oncology, highlighting our position as a leading international medical center for complex gastrointestinal diseases.
Asan Medical Center continues to expand its international presence through education and collaboration. Thousands of physicians from more than 90 countries have completed training programs here, creating a broad global network. In a recent report, Asan Medical Center reaffirmed its position as a hub for international academic exchange, highlighting the return of global physicians and researchers after the COVID 19 pandemic and its influence in shaping clinical practice worldwide
