The Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery led by three professors with rich clinical experience and excellent skills is in charge of surgical treatment of children with congenital heart defects.
We undertake overall surgical treatment of all kinds of congenital pediatric heart diseases such as congenital heart malformation, complex cardiac anomaly, congenital heart defects, pediatric valvular heart diseases, and myocradiopathy. Especially in the field of cardiac transplantation, we have achieved outstanding performance. For instance, we performed the first and largest heart transplantations as well as heart transplantations in the youngest patient, and children patients with disproportionate cardiac size. We also support treatment requiring extracorporeal circulation assist devices for issues unrelated to heart such as serious lung disease or congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
Surgery is performed for five days a week by great teamwork of the pediatric cardiac anesthesiology, cardiopulmonary, and operating room nursing teams. After the operation, specialists and nurses in pediatric critical cardiac patients take care of children patients at the pediatric ICU equipped with cutting-edge facilities. If children patients are transferred to the general ward as conditions improve, they will receive the best treatment and care required for overall recovery through close collaboration with the relevant departments.
Surgical teams are on standby for fast response to emergency patients. Moreover we answer questions and offer counseling via a helpline or the Congenital Heart Disease Center website to relieve family’s concerns.
In addition, we work very closely with the neonatal ICU team to successfully perform heart surgery of very low birth weight infants (VLBWI). If the heart failure is diagnosed by prenatal ultrasonography, we offer detailed counseling of an overall pre- and post-natal treatment plan Even after discharge, we hold gatherings for children with a single ventricle or heart transplantation and their parents to help them share their experience and maintain close relationship for emotional support.
